Description
Lysmata kuekenthali is a marine shrimp of the genus Lysmata distributed in the Indo-West Pacific. Its translucent body is marked with complex red to reddish-brown patterns, and it commonly spends much of its time sheltered among rocks and crevices. In the Japanese marine aquarium trade it is also known as the “Aiptasia shrimp” because individuals are known to feed on pest anemones commonly called Aiptasia in reef aquaria.
Its effectiveness against Aiptasia varies among individuals and aquarium conditions, so it should be regarded as one form of biological control rather than a guaranteed method of complete eradication. The genus Lysmata is also notable for a reproductive system known as protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism: individuals initially reproduce as males and later develop female reproductive function while retaining the ability to function as males.
Basic Information
Scientific Name | Lysmata kuekenthali (De Man, 1902) |
|---|---|
Order Decapoda, Infraorder Caridea, Family Lysmatidae, Genus Lysmata. Current international taxonomic databases place the genus in Lysmatidae, while some older or regional classifications retain it within Hippolytidae. |
English Name | Kükenthal’s Cleaner Shrimp |
Known from tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific. |
Reported size varies among sources. A biological database records a maximum total length of 3.5 cm, while aquarium references commonly describe adults around 5 cm and occasionally up to approximately 5–6 cm. |
Aquarium references sometimes estimate a lifespan of around 2–3 years, although well-established species-specific longevity data are limited. Actual lifespan varies with water quality, nutrition, and the condition of the individual. |
Aquarium Environment
Around 50–60 liters or more is a commonly cited guideline for one or a small number of individuals. A standard aquarium of approximately 60 cm in length provides a practical starting point. When maintaining a group or housing them with fish, adequate rockwork and numerous shelters are as important as total water volume. |
|---|---|
Approximately 23–27°C is a practical range. Sudden temperature changes should be avoided. |
Maintain stable marine conditions similar to those used for a typical reef aquarium. A specific gravity of approximately 1.023–1.025 and pH around 8.1–8.4 are practical guidelines. Avoid introducing the shrimp into an immature aquarium where ammonia or nitrite is detectable. |
Provide live rock or other suitable rockwork with several dark crevices, caves, and shaded overhangs. The shrimp often remains sheltered during brighter periods, and secure narrow refuges are particularly valuable immediately after molting. |
Crustaceans are sensitive to abrupt changes in salinity and temperature, so new specimens should be acclimated gradually. Drip acclimation is a useful method. Copper-containing fish medications can be harmful to shrimp and other invertebrates and should not be used in an aquarium containing this species. |
Feeding
This species is an opportunistic omnivore. In aquaria it may feed on Aiptasia as well as leftover fish food and other animal-based foods. Frozen mysids, brine shrimp, finely chopped marine foods, and sinking diets for crustaceans can be offered. It should not be maintained on Aiptasia alone. |
|---|---|
Additional feeding may be minimal when sufficient food reaches the shrimp during regular fish feeding, but once Aiptasia becomes scarce, its body condition should be monitored and supplemental food provided as needed. Activity often increases after the lights dim, making the period around lights-out convenient for offering small amounts of sinking food. Avoid excessive feeding that leaves uneaten food in the aquarium. |
Temperament and Tank Mates
Generally peaceful and secretive, this shrimp spends much of its time around rocky shelters. Newly introduced individuals may remain hidden, although they often become more visible at feeding time once acclimated. Several individuals can be kept together when sufficient shelter is available. |
|---|---|
It is generally compatible with small peaceful marine fishes, but should not be housed with predatory wrasses, hawkfish, groupers, or other fishes that readily eat shrimp. It is kept successfully in many reef aquaria, although it should not be assumed to ignore corals under all circumstances. Aquarium observations include stealing food from corals and occasionally picking at polyps, especially when other food is scarce. |
Diseases and Prevention
There is limited information on diseases specifically established for this species in aquaria. In practice, problems associated with sudden changes in water chemistry, transport stress, poor water quality, and molting are generally of greater concern than named infectious diseases. Affected shrimp may become inactive or show reduced interest in food. |
|---|---|
Introduce the shrimp only into a mature aquarium and avoid abrupt changes in salinity, temperature, and pH. Stable conditions should be maintained through regular water changes and appropriate feeding, with secure shelters available during molting. Newly acquired shrimp should be acclimated carefully, and copper-containing medications should be avoided. |
Breeding
Mature individuals should not be viewed simply as permanent males and females in the way typical separate-sex shrimp are. Lysmata species are known for protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism: young individuals first mature as males and later develop the ability to produce and brood eggs while retaining male reproductive function. An egg-bearing mature individual has therefore not necessarily lost its ability to function as a male. |
|---|---|
The shrimp is oviparous, carrying developing eggs beneath the abdomen on the pleopods after mating. The hatchlings are not miniature bottom-dwelling adults. They enter a planktonic larval phase and pass through multiple developmental stages before transforming into juvenile shrimp. |
Egg carrying may be observed when several mature shrimp are maintained together, but raising the larvae through settlement is considerably more difficult. In a community aquarium, larvae are easily eaten by fish or drawn into filtration equipment, so serious propagation attempts require a dedicated larval-rearing container. Gentle circulation should prevent delicate larvae from repeatedly striking hard surfaces, while appropriately sized foods such as newly hatched Artemia nauplii are supplied according to developmental stage. A standardized home-aquarium protocol for this species is not firmly established, so development should not be assumed to follow one fixed timetable. |
Trivia and Fun Facts
A species described in 1902 | アカモエビは1902年、オランダの甲殻類研究者J.G. de Manによって記載されました。 Lysmata kuekenthali was described in 1902 by the Dutch carcinologist J.G. de Man from material collected during zoological work associated with German zoologist Willy Kükenthal in the Indonesian Archipelago, including the Moluccas and Borneo. It was originally described under Hippolyte and was later transferred to Lysmata. The species name preserves Kükenthal’s name. |
|---|---|
Lysmata and Hippolysmata were historically separated largely by differences in the accessory branch of the first antennule. Because this character appeared variable, Chace treated Hippolysmata as a synonym of Lysmata in 1972. Later molecular studies, however, showed that accessory-branch morphology still contains useful phylogenetic information. The history therefore does not simply mean that the character was useless; instead, it illustrates how classification has progressed from morphology alone toward interpretations that combine morphology and DNA evidence. |
More than a simple male-to-female sex change | Lysmata属で知られる雄性先熟同時雌雄同体は、一般的な「性転換」と少し違います。 Protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism in Lysmata differs from a simple permanent male-to-female sex change. Young shrimp initially reproduce as males. Later they acquire the ability to produce eggs, but do not completely lose male reproductive function. Mature individuals can therefore potentially perform both reproductive roles depending on the mating situation. This unusual system is one reason Lysmata has attracted considerable interest in studies of reproductive and evolutionary biology. |
Aiptasia can enter aquaria on live rock and other materials and may multiply under favorable conditions, sometimes irritating nearby corals. Lysmata kuekenthali is used as a biological control because individuals are known to consume these anemones. The response is not identical in every shrimp, however: some aquarium observations report large Aiptasia being left untouched or other foods being preferred. It should therefore not be described as a guaranteed eradication method. |
“Peppermint shrimp” does not identify a single species | アクアリウムで使われる「ペパーミントシュリンプ」という呼び名は、赤い模様を持つ複数のLysmata属のエビに使われることがあります。 The aquarium name “peppermint shrimp” is applied to several red-patterned species of Lysmata and does not by itself identify L. kuekenthali. Many species in the genus are superficially similar. Reliable identification may require close examination of characters such as rostral dentition, walking legs, and the accessory branch of the antennule. When the goal is Aiptasia control, purchasing shrimp identified by scientific name provides better information than relying on the generic trade name alone. |
Similar-looking relatives are not necessarily the same species | アカモエビの周辺には、形態や色彩がよく似たLysmata属の種類が存在します。 Several Lysmata species resemble L. kuekenthali in morphology and coloration. Lysmata hochi, described from the Caribbean, is morphologically similar but continues to be treated as a separate species. In contrast, Hippolysmata marleyi, originally described from southern Africa, is currently listed by WoRMS as a synonym of L. kuekenthali. These examples illustrate why external similarity or geographic separation alone is not enough to establish species identity in this group. |
A shrimp introduced for Aiptasia control does not become unnecessary once the pest population declines. It is not an obligate Aiptasia specialist and can continue feeding on leftover fish food and prepared diets. Once Aiptasia becomes scarce, the shrimp’s body condition should be monitored and supplemental food provided when needed. Adequate feeding supports long-term health and may also reduce excessive attempts to steal food from corals. |
Carrying eggs and raising larvae are very different challenges | 成熟したLysmata属のエビでは、腹部に卵を抱えた姿を水槽内で観察できることがあります。 Mature Lysmata shrimp may sometimes be observed carrying eggs beneath the abdomen in aquaria, but producing eggs and successfully raising the larvae are very different challenges. Newly hatched larvae remain suspended in the water column and are easily eaten by fish or drawn into filtration systems in a community tank. Successful propagation requires dedicated larval housing, gentle circulation, and a sustained supply of appropriately sized foods, making larval culture considerably more demanding than maintaining adults. |
Conclusion
Lysmata kuekenthali is an attractive small marine shrimp with distinctive red markings, and it is also valued in reef aquaria because some individuals feed on Aiptasia. Adults are relatively manageable when provided with stable marine conditions, gradual acclimation, and ample shelter. Its response to Aiptasia varies, however, and individuals may sometimes steal food from corals, so appropriate feeding and continued observation remain important after introduction.
Behind its aquarium role lies a long taxonomic history dating to 1902, the unusual reproductive biology characteristic of Lysmata, and a life cycle that includes planktonic larvae. Watching the shrimp emerge from rockwork to forage, molt, and sometimes carry eggs reveals far more than its usefulness as an Aiptasia-control animal. Its greatest value in the aquarium comes from treating it not simply as a pest-control tool, but as a marine animal to be maintained and observed over the long term.
