Description

The broad-band Axelrodi is a small bottom-dwelling catfish from Colombia, distinguished by a broad black stripe against a pale brown body. A dark band through the eye and a prominent stripe along the upper flank give it a striking yet understated appearance, complemented by a short, rounded snout and a somewhat elongated silhouette. In Japan, it is commonly sold as Corydoras Broad-band Axelrodi. It is currently treated as a form of Hoplisoma under the identification code CW169. Although it resembles the familiar Axelrod’s cory, the taxonomic relationship between them remains unresolved. Its habit of searching the sand with companions and resting beside them beneath driftwood makes it an engaging aquarium resident. Successful care begins with careful attention to feeding and body condition after introduction, together with a clean substrate and a peaceful place to eat.

Basic Information

Scientific Name Hoplisoma sp. CW169
CW169。CW169 cory; sold in Japan under trade names meaning Broad-band Axelrodi and Broad-line Axelrodi.
Order Siluriformes; family Callichthyidae; subfamily Corydoradinae; genus Hoplisoma.
English Name CW169 Cory
Colombia, South America. Fish in the trade have been associated with the area around Granada in Meta Department and with the Río Ariari. Precise collecting sites and the full distribution remain incompletely established.
Adults generally reach about 4–5 cm in total length, including the tail. Aquarium observations suggest approximately 4–4.5 cm for males and about 5 cm for females, with females tending to grow larger. A firmly established maximum size is not available.
Neither the average nor the maximum lifespan of CW169 has been firmly established. The age of a wild-caught fish at purchase may be unknown, so the number of years it has been kept after purchase does not necessarily indicate its actual age.

Aquarium Environment

For a group of around six, a standard Japanese 60 cm aquarium measuring 60 × 30 × 36 cm, in the approximately 60 L class, is a practical starting point. With more fish or additional tank mates, consider a 60 cm wide aquarium measuring 60 × 45 × 45 cm, approximately 120 L, or a larger setup. Prioritize usable floor space where every fish can rest and forage, as well as water volume.
A practical maintenance range is 22–26°C, with small day-to-day fluctuations. During prolonged summer heat, manage room temperature or use suitable aquarium cooling equipment, while maintaining adequate oxygenation. Keep the temperature of replacement water close to that of the aquarium.
Use soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, with approximately pH 6.0–7.2 as a maintenance guide. Keep the aquarium biologically mature and maintain undetectable ammonia and nitrite. A weekly water change of about one-quarter to one-third is a useful starting routine, adjusted to stocking and waste accumulation. Dechlorinate replacement water and match its temperature and chemistry. When using driftwood or leaves, check pH and hardness independently of the water’s color.
A thin layer of smooth, fine sand, approximately 0.5–1 cm deep, encourages natural foraging. Japanese aquarium sand such as Tasuna is one option. Provide shade with driftwood and plants while leaving open feeding areas in front. Arrange gentle circulation near the bottom, together with sheltered resting places away from the current. Keep uneaten food and debris from accumulating on the sand.
After introduction, watch for a sunken abdomen, rapid breathing, and poor feeding responses. Small or underweight individuals need particularly careful management in a setting where they can eat undisturbed. Maintain clear access to the surface for air breathing and use a lid to prevent jumping. The firm pectoral and dorsal spines can become entangled in nets, so gently guiding the fish into a water-filled container is often easier. Avoid grasping it with bare hands.

Feeding

Use small sinking pellets or corydoras tablets as the staple, supplemented with foods such as frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp. Carefully sourced and maintained live Tubifex worms can help encourage feeding in individuals unfamiliar with prepared foods. Gradually introduce a nutritionally balanced prepared diet rather than relying only on foods such as Tubifex and frozen bloodworms.
Feed once or twice daily, ensuring that food reaches every fish, and adjust portions according to body condition and leftovers. Distribute food among several locations or offer it during a quiet period with subdued lighting to reduce competition. Food lying on the bottom does not prove that each fish is eating, so observe individuals directly. Newly introduced, underweight fish benefit from small portions of readily accepted foods, with leftovers removed. Offer food specifically for CW169 rather than relying on other fishes’ leftovers.

Temperament and Tank Mates

A peaceful fish that often forages in loose association with companions. It may remain under cover after introduction or when secure resting places are scarce. Keeping several CW169 together and providing both shelter and open sand makes its everyday behavior easier to observe. Activity and wariness vary among individuals.
Small, peaceful tetras and rasboras with compatible temperature and water requirements are suitable candidates. Avoid companions that monopolize food, nip fins or barbels, or strongly defend territories on the bottom. Even dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma may drive corydoras away during breeding. Do not house CW169 with fish large enough to swallow it, as its spines may become lodged during an attempted predation, injuring both fish.

Diseases and Prevention

No disease has been established as particularly common in CW169, but parasitic diseases such as freshwater white spot and bacterial infections associated with injuries to the mouth, barbels, or fins deserve attention. White spots, rubbing against objects, damaged fins, reduced appetite, and altered breathing are signs to notice early. Persistent weight loss may involve inadequate feeding, competition, or parasites. Neither weight loss nor white spots alone identifies the cause with certainty.
Observe newly acquired fish for at least about 30 days in a separate aquarium with established filtration, and avoid sharing nets or siphon hoses between it and the main aquarium. Maintain substrate cleanliness, appropriate feeding, and regular water changes. When problems appear, measure temperature, ammonia, and nitrite, and check that aeration is working properly. Isolate affected fish when appropriate and seek advice from a veterinarian experienced with fish. Verify that any medication is suitable for the fish and follow the product’s labeled directions and dosage, without estimating doses by eye or combining treatments without guidance.

Breeding

Viewed from above, mature females tend to be larger and broader through the abdomen, while males are relatively small and slender. The difference becomes clearer when females carry eggs. Some aquarium observations suggest that males retain sharply defined dark stripes while the outlines become more diffuse in growing females, but pattern alone is not conclusive. Juveniles are difficult to sex; compare overall size and abdominal shape after maturity.
An egg layer that attaches adhesive eggs to surfaces such as aquarium glass. Aquarium spawning and fry rearing have been achieved in Japan, with eggs visually estimated at approximately 2 mm in one breeding account. Adults or tank mates may eat the eggs, so protect them in a separate container when attempting to raise fry.

Select healthy, mature CW169 as broodstock and condition them with a balanced diet and clean water. Continue partial water changes that maintain stable temperature and pH, while watching for a fuller female abdomen and courtship chasing.

Handle eggs carefully without compressing them and protect them in a rearing container matched to the parent aquarium’s temperature and water chemistry. Provide gentle circulation or aeration and remove eggs that turn opaque and deteriorate. After hatching, observe the absorption of the yolk and the onset of independent feeding, then offer small portions of appropriately sized foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp. Remove leftovers frequently and make small water changes with closely matched water. Hatching and growth rates can vary, so let the condition of the eggs and fry guide care rather than relying on a fixed timetable.

Trivia and Fun Facts

The Return of Hoplisoma Hoplisoma is a historical genus name proposed by Swainson in 1838. Research combining genetic information with anatomical features gradually clarified relationships among fishes long grouped within Corydoras, and a classification revision published in 2024 brought the name back into use. The familiar Axelrod’s cory was transferred to Hoplisoma, and CW169 is now treated as a fish within that genus whose species status remains unresolved. Aquarium shops still commonly use “Corydoras,” but the name Hoplisoma reflects the continuing effort to understand relationships that outward appearance alone cannot fully reveal.
Understanding CW169 and the Axelrodi Name CW169は、コリドラス・ワールドで割り当てられた識別番号です。 CW169 is an identification code assigned through Corydoras World. It gives aquarists a shared reference for a recognizable form even when a formal species name has not been settled. The abbreviation “sp.” indicates that the species is unspecified; receiving a code does not by itself establish a separate new species. The Axelrodi part of the trade name refers to its resemblance to the familiar Axelrod’s cory. The name axelrodi in that fish’s scientific name honors Herbert R. Axelrod, an American aquarist involved in collecting specimens and supplying them to a museum. The trade name therefore connects a modern identification system with part of aquarium history.
“Broad-band” refers to the unusually wide dark stripe running lengthwise along the flank. Around 2021, Japanese aquarists began drawing attention to fish imported as ordinary Axelrod’s cory that differed in stripe width and body shape. Similar forms such as CW021 also exist, however, so stripe width alone is not a definitive identification feature. Markings near the cheek, the position of the stripe, its termination near the tail base, and overall body shape provide additional clues. Because appearance can change with growth and condition, comparing a newly acquired fish with its later adult appearance adds another rewarding dimension to keeping it.
Barbels, Sand, and Feeding The barbels around the mouth are important sensory structures used to search for food along the bottom. Corydoras relatives often take sand into the mouth and separate edible particles from it. Clean, fine sand therefore supports exploratory feeding behavior as well as reducing abrasion around the mouth. Their habit of picking up food from the substrate sometimes earns them the label “cleaner fish,” but feces and accumulated dirt cannot serve as their staple diet. Watching each individual feed helps reveal quieter fish that may be missing out while more active companions take the food. Mealtimes are also a useful opportunity to assess health.
A Quick Trip to the Surface for Air A fish resting on the bottom may suddenly swim to the surface, take in air, and return almost immediately. In corydoras relatives, this behavior is associated with supplementary intestinal air breathing. Oxygen from swallowed air is absorbed through a highly vascularized region of the intestine, a useful adaptation when dissolved oxygen becomes scarce. Occasional surface visits are normal, but a sudden increase in frequency, especially involving several fish, calls for checks of temperature, oxygenation, and water quality. Even with this supplementary breathing ability, adequate aquarium oxygenation remains important.
The Armor of a Peaceful Fish The genus name Hoplisoma combines Greek words for “shield” or “armor” and “body.” Fittingly, two rows of bony plates run along each side, protecting the small fish. Firm pectoral and dorsal spines provide additional defense. These structures are easy to overlook when watching its peaceful daily activity, but the spines require care during handling. Gently guiding the fish into a water-filled container helps avoid entangling them in a net.
Similar Patterns and an Evolutionary Story Different corydoras species sometimes share remarkably similar color patterns. One explanation investigated in this group is Müllerian mimicry, in which defended animals share a warning appearance. When a predator learns to avoid fish with one such pattern, other fish with a similar appearance may also become less likely to be attacked. Whether CW169’s dark stripe evolved through this mechanism, and how it interacts with similar fishes in nature, remain unconfirmed. Its simple black band offers a starting point for thinking about habitat, predators, and the evolutionary history behind outward appearance.
Spawning Mysteries and a Developing Pattern The T-position is a well-known feature of reproduction in corydoras relatives: the female brings her mouth close to the male’s abdomen, arranging the pair in a T shape. She holds eggs between her pelvic fins and carries them to a spawning site. Japanese rearing observations of broad-band Axelrodi also show the characteristic dark stripe appearing as juveniles grow. Watching the young gradually develop a stripe resembling their parents’ is one of the pleasures of breeding. Keeping photographs of the parents together with their original trade name and locality information provides useful background when passing the fish to another keeper.

Conclusion

The broad-band Axelrodi combines a bold black stripe with the quiet charm of foraging over sand alongside its companions. Clean sand, secure shelter, and food that reaches every individual support healthy aquarium life. Careful observation of feeding and abdominal condition is especially important after introduction.

Its searching barbels and brief trips to the surface reveal characteristic aspects of life in this group. Changes in body shape and pattern as it grows add to the pleasure of observation, giving the aquarium floor a quiet and engaging presence.
