Hasemania negodagua is a small freshwater characin endemic to the upper Paraguaçu River basin in Bahia, Brazil, and is known as a distinctive tetra whose name refers to Nego d’Água, a legendary river figure from Brazilian folklore. Formerly treated under Hyphessobrycon in some references, it is now placed in Hasemania, a genus of compact American tetras with localized distributions and a subtle, natural ornamental appeal. When understanding Hasemania negodagua in an aquarium or biotope context, it should be regarded as a peaceful, group-oriented species that benefits from clean, stable water, gentle flow, shaded cover, and fine foods suited to small characins, allowing its calm schooling behavior and understated beauty to be appreciated in a healthy environment.
