Pantodon buchholzi

Pantodon buchholzi is a distinctive African freshwater fish known for its surface-dwelling lifestyle, wing-like pectoral fins, and unusual appearance that gives it the common name African butterflyfish. It spends much of its time near the water surface, where it waits quietly for small insects and other prey, making its behavior especially interesting for aquarists who enjoy observing natural predatory strategies. Its broad fins, upward-facing mouth, and calm hovering posture create a unique presence in the aquarium, but this species is best kept in a covered tank with gentle water movement and open surface space. Because Pantodon buchholzi is a specialized surface predator, careful attention should be given to tankmate selection, feeding, and a stable environment that allows it to display its natural behavior without unnecessary stress.
