Steatogenys is a genus of weakly electric freshwater knifefishes native to tropical South America, where its members inhabit slow-moving streams, flooded forests, and other dimly lit environments. The genus is characterized by an elongated body, mottled coloration resembling fallen leaves, and a distinctive swimming style that allows the fish to move forward, backward, or remain nearly stationary while searching for food. Steatogenys uses weak electric signals to detect nearby objects, communicate with other individuals, and locate small invertebrates in murky water. In captivity, subdued lighting, numerous hiding places, stable water quality, and suitable foods such as frozen insect larvae and small crustaceans are essential for maintaining its health and encouraging natural behavior.
