Pangasianodon hypophthalmus

Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is the scientific name of the iridescent shark catfish, a large freshwater catfish native to major Southeast Asian river systems such as the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins. Although juveniles are sometimes sold in the aquarium trade for their silver body, dark lateral stripes, and shark-like silhouette, this species is not a true shark and can grow far beyond the scale of ordinary home aquariums. When discussing Pangasianodon hypophthalmus in an aquarium context, it is especially important to understand the difference between the attractive juvenile form and the adult size, as long-term care requires exceptional swimming space, stable water quality, and a realistic plan for housing a powerful riverine fish as it matures.
