It is the most popular species of Polypterus and is immensely popular as the “beginner’s bichir” due to its ease of care and relatively small size. It is kept by many enthusiasts, offering the full “dinosaur fish” appeal with its crocodile-like face, hard ganoid scales, and series of dorsal finlets. Many cultivated varieties, such as albino and long-fin types, are also widely available.
