Description

Plakobranchus ocellatus is a sacoglossan sea slug in the family Plakobranchidae that inhabits shallow tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. Its broad, flattened body is covered with eye-like spots and bears large parapodia that fold over the back. When the parapodia open, vivid green tissues become visible; these tissues contain chloroplasts acquired from the green algae on which the slug feeds. Instead of digesting all of these chloroplasts immediately, the slug retains them inside its cells, where they remain photosynthetically active for extended periods. This phenomenon is known as kleptoplasty. In nature, however, the slug continues to obtain most of its nutrition by feeding on algae, while kleptoplast photosynthesis becomes particularly important when food is scarce.

Basic Information

Scientific Name Plakobranchus ocellatus van Hasselt, 1824
Plakobranchus; “solar-powered sea slug” is also used informally
(Plakobranchidae)Phylum Mollusca, Class Gastropoda, Heterobranchia, Order Sacoglossa, Family Plakobranchidae
English Name Ocellate sapsucker
Records identified as Plakobranchus ocellatus are widespread in shallow tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. In Japan, it has been recorded from the southwestern islands including Okinawa, particularly in shallow sandy or mixed-sediment habitats. Animals historically identified as P. ocellatus include multiple genetically distinct lineages and are regarded as a species complex, so precise species-level identification can be difficult from external appearance alone.
Approximately 4–6 cm. Reported size varies, and the taxon is a species complex.
The natural lifespan is not firmly established. Starvation experiments have documented survival for several months, but these results should not be treated as a measure of normal lifespan. In captivity, long-term survival depends strongly on a continuous supply of suitable live green algae.

Aquarium Environment

No scientifically established minimum aquarium size is available for this species. There is insufficient evidence to define a particular standard tank as a minimum. More important than tank volume alone are stable water quality, access to fine sand, and a reliable supply of suitable live green algae. A system that allows food algae to be maintained separately in a refugium or culture tank is preferable.
Temperatures around 24–25°C have been used successfully in research husbandry. However, a species-specific optimum range and a clear upper temperature limit have not been firmly established. Rather than relying on an exact threshold, maintain a stable tropical marine temperature and avoid rapid fluctuations.
There are insufficient species-specific husbandry data to define an exact optimum salinity or pH. Maintain stable, full-strength marine conditions close to natural seawater, avoid ammonia and nitrite accumulation, and prevent sudden changes in salinity. A mature, stable marine system is more important than chasing narrowly defined numerical targets.
In the wild, this slug is commonly found on shallow sandy or mixed soft sediments and may partly bury itself. Provide fine sand and areas where it can burrow. Light is relevant to kleptoplast photosynthesis, but closing the parapodia and burying in sand appear to help shield internal kleptoplasts from excessive irradiance. Avoid forcing the animal into continuous intense light; instead provide shaded or burrowing options so it can regulate its own exposure, and avoid abrupt changes in lighting.
The most important requirement for long-term care is a continuous supply of live green algae that the individual actually eats. Kleptoplast photosynthesis can extend survival during starvation, but wild animals repeatedly feed on algae and obtain most of their nutrition from feeding. It is therefore incorrect to treat this species as an animal that can live on light alone. Because diet may vary among populations or lineages, suitable algae should be prepared in advance and actual feeding should be confirmed.

Feeding

The primary diet is live green algae. Using its specialized sacoglossan radula, the slug punctures algal cells and sucks out their contents. Chloroplast-DNA studies have identified multiple green-algal sources, including lineages of Halimeda, Caulerpa, Acetabularia, and related siphonous algae. There is no reliable evidence that ordinary pellets, flakes, or standard frozen aquarium foods can replace live algal food.
Algae that appear spontaneously in the display tank may not provide a reliable food supply. It is preferable to maintain several candidate green algae in a refugium or separate culture system and verify that the individual is actually feeding. Algae identified as chloroplast sources in research should not be assumed to be equally preferred by every population or lineage. Persistent shrinking of the animal should prompt concern about chronic food shortage.

Temperament and Tank Mates

It is a peaceful, slow-moving herbivore and does not actively prey on other aquarium animals. It crawls over sand and hard surfaces. Adults lack a large defensive shell, and several secondary metabolites have been isolated from Plakobranchus. These compounds are studied in the broader context of chemical defense in shell-less sacoglossans.
This species feeds on green algae and is not an active predator of corals or other animals. However, its soft body and slow movement make it vulnerable to fishes that peck at benthic invertebrates and to large crustaceans, so such tank mates are best avoided. Even with small peaceful fishes, compatibility has not been systematically established and the slug should be monitored for nipping or persistent disturbance.

Diseases and Prevention

No aquarium-specific infectious disease is well established as being particularly common in this species. In practice, husbandry problems such as chronic shrinking from inadequate food, unstable water conditions, abrupt environmental changes, excessive light exposure, and physical injury are likely to be more important concerns than a named disease.
Prevention centers on stable marine conditions, a dependable supply of live algal food, and avoiding abrupt changes in lighting or flow. If wounds, persistent shrinking, or reduced responsiveness are observed, first review water quality, actual feeding, lighting, flow, and tank mates. No standardized species-specific treatment protocol is established, so medications should not be used without identifying a plausible cause and confirming invertebrate safety.

Breeding

This species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, with both male and female reproductive functions in each individual, so it is not divided externally into separate males and females. Multiple mature individuals are required for mating-based breeding.
Individuals mate, and species of Plakobranchus possess a penial stylet associated with hypodermic insemination. Eggs are laid as whitish to cream-colored gelatinous ribbons attached to algae or other substrates, and veliger larvae develop before hatching.
Even if spawning occurs in captivity, no reproducible home-aquarium protocol is established for raising larvae through settlement, metamorphosis, and juvenile growth. Obtaining eggs is not the same as completing the life cycle, and specialized breeding facilities are required to control conditions from the larval stage onward. This is not a species expected to establish successive generations spontaneously in an ordinary display aquarium.

Trivia and Fun Facts

What “photosynthetic animal” really means Plakobranchus does not make chloroplasts of its own. It retains some chloroplasts from ingested green algae inside cells of its digestive gland instead of digesting them immediately. Nutritional studies of wild animals indicate that most nutrition comes from feeding on algae, while starvation experiments show longer survival under a light-dark cycle than in continuous darkness. Kleptoplasty is therefore best understood as nutritional support during food shortage, not as a solar-powered replacement for normal feeding.
From chloroplast clues to direct feeding observations Because this slug is often found on sandy bottoms and is difficult to watch feeding in the wild, its natural diet remained poorly understood for many years. Researchers therefore analyzed DNA from the chloroplasts retained inside the animal and showed that a single slug can carry chloroplasts from several green-algal sources. More recently, direct feeding on green algae has also been documented in Japanese P. ocellatus type black. Earlier ideas that adults might live without feeding arose not because feeding was absent, but because both the food algae and the feeding behavior were difficult to detect.
Parapodia as a living sunshade Kleptoplasts need light, but excessive irradiance can stress the photosynthetic machinery. Experiments exposing P. ocellatus to different light regimes found no clear short-term photoacclimation of the retained chloroplasts. The large parapodia therefore become important: by closing them over the green internal tissues, the slug can reduce light exposure. Burrowing in sand may provide an additional way to avoid excessive irradiance. The parapodia are not merely a striking feature; they function as movable shading that helps protect the borrowed photosynthetic machinery within the body.
The slug did not need to steal algal genes Chloroplasts normally depend on many proteins encoded by the algal nucleus, so researchers once debated whether algal photosynthesis genes had been horizontally transferred into the sea slug nuclear genome. Whole-genome analysis found no algal nuclear photosynthesis genes capable of explaining long-term kleptoplast maintenance. Instead, gene families related to proteolysis and immunity were expanded or highly expressed in the slug, suggesting that host cellular mechanisms may contribute to maintaining the retained chloroplasts.
Eye-spots, names, and a taxonomic puzzle The species name ocellatus refers to the eye-like circular markings scattered across the body. Van Hasselt originally spelled the genus Plakobranchus, but the spelling Placobranchus appeared in a French translation in 1824 and remained widely used for many years. Plakobranchus is now the accepted form. DNA studies have also revealed multiple independently evolving lineages among animals historically grouped under P. ocellatus, showing that considerable taxonomic diversity is hidden behind very similar external appearances.
Chemical defense in place of a shell Several complex secondary metabolites, including polypropionates, have been isolated from Plakobranchus. In shell-less sacoglossans, such chemistry has long been studied in relation to defense against predators. However, the ecological role of every individual compound isolated from Plakobranchus has not been demonstrated in the wild. Recent chemical studies have reported compounds with antibacterial activity or activity against cultured cells, but these laboratory results do not by themselves establish a medical effect. Ecological function and in-vitro pharmacological activity should be considered separately.

Conclusion

Plakobranchus is a sacoglossan sea slug that repeatedly feeds on green algae while retaining some of their chloroplasts inside its own cells for long periods. When food is available it obtains most nutrition by feeding, while kleptoplast photosynthesis helps support survival during food shortage. Its diet, body form, use of light, and behaviors such as closing the parapodia or burying in sand are closely linked parts of the same way of life.

In captivity, clean stable seawater and appropriate lighting are not enough; the keeper must also maintain a continuous supply of live green algae that the individual actually eats. Because P. ocellatus is a species complex and algal use can vary among populations, its care cannot be reduced to one fixed set of numbers or a single universal food. Husbandry is most successful when the animal’s feeding ecology is treated as the central requirement, allowing its unusual life with borrowed chloroplasts to be observed without relying on oversimplified assumptions.
