Description

The Black-bar Chromis is a small marine fish with a pale yellow to tan body crossed by a distinct black bar. The white base of its tail and pale caudal fin accentuate this contrast. A closer look reveals a blue iris and blue markings beneath the eye. In the wild, it lives near branching corals and feeds on zooplankton during daylight hours. In an aquarium, its appeal includes feeding near a shelter and watching its surroundings from a crevice. Despite its small size, it establishes territories, so aggression between individuals requires attention. Provide ample retreats, choose tank mates carefully, and quarantine new arrivals before introduction.

Basic Information

Scientific Name Pycnochromis retrofasciatus (Weber, 1913)
Black-bar Chromis
Family Pomacentridae; genus Pycnochromis
English Name Black-bar Chromis, Blackbar Puller
Distributed primarily in the western Pacific, from Indonesia to Fiji and Tonga, and from the Ryukyu Islands of Japan southward to Australia and New Caledonia.
Up to approximately 6 cm standard length. Standard length excludes the caudal fin and differs from total length, which includes it.
A reliable species-specific estimate of captive lifespan is not available. Plan for long-term care rather than short-term display.

Aquarium Environment

A Japanese-standard 90 cm aquarium, including models holding approximately 160 L, is one option for providing ample shelter and swimming space. For multiple individuals, consider a wide 90 cm aquarium or a standard 120 cm aquarium with a larger footprint. Tank size alone does not determine a safe stocking number or guarantee compatibility. Actual water volume varies with the aquarium dimensions and rockwork, so prioritize a layout that gives every fish an accessible retreat.
A stable temperature around 24–25°C is a practical management target. Avoid sudden changes and provide suitable cooling equipment when summer conditions would otherwise overheat the aquarium. High temperatures recorded in the wild should not automatically be treated as suitable for long-term aquarium care.
Captive maintenance and breeding of this species have been reported at a salinity of approximately 33–35 ppt. When using a specific-gravity instrument, distinguish specific gravity from salinity and check the instrument’s reference temperature and conversion guidance. A pH of 8.1–8.4 and alkalinity of 8–12 dKH are general marine-aquarium management guidelines. Alkalinity relates to the water’s resistance to changes in pH. Prioritize stable, appropriate conditions rather than frequent adjustments, and account for the requirements of any corals kept in the same aquarium.
Use live rock to create crevices and small caves, distributing shelters throughout the aquarium. Branch-shaped artificial coral can also help provide protected retreats. Living branching corals are an option, but there is no need to introduce corals whose care requirements cannot be met simply to provide fish shelter. Avoid filling the aquarium too densely with rock, and retain both sheltered areas and space for feeding.
New arrivals may be affected by transport and environmental changes. Observe appetite, breathing, and skin condition in a quarantine aquarium before introduction to a community tank. Watch for fish that remain hidden without feeding, repeatedly receive aggression, or develop injuries. Have a divider or separate aquarium available so that individuals can be separated if aggression persists.

Feeding

In the wild, it feeds mainly on zooplankton. In an aquarium, offer appropriately sized marine pellets or finely divided flakes, supplemented with frozen copepods, mysid shrimp, and brine shrimp. Balanced foods containing plant ingredients can also be used, but this is not a herbivorous fish. Reduce the size of food items when necessary.
Offer small portions several times a day. Increasing feeding frequency should not automatically increase the total daily ration. Newly introduced fish may not immediately accept prepared foods, so check that food is actually being swallowed. Adjust portions to avoid leftovers and make sure subordinate fish receive food when several individuals are housed together.

Temperament and Tank Mates

This species establishes territories around shelters and may show aggression toward conspecifics. When several individuals are kept together, dominance relationships can leave weaker fish repeatedly chased or excluded from food and retreats. Adding more fish does not necessarily resolve aggression, so stocking decisions should not rely on group size alone. Prioritize conditions in which every fish can feed and rest safely rather than the appearance of a group.
Consider companions of compatible size and activity level that do not persistently harass one another. Suitably chosen anthias, fairy wrasses, and cardinalfishes may be candidates, but their temperaments and care requirements differ, so assess each species individually. Be cautious with aggressive damselfishes and strongly territorial clownfishes, and ensure shy fish such as firefish are not excluded from feeding areas. The Black-bar Chromis is generally considered unlikely to damage corals and suitable for reef aquariums, but compatibility with corals does not guarantee compatibility with other fish.

Diseases and Prevention

Infections involving ciliates such as Uronema are among the diseases that warrant attention in marine fish. Infections have been reported in other damselfishes, but the incidence and relative susceptibility of the Black-bar Chromis are not well documented. Possible signs include red ulcers, hemorrhagic patches, reduced appetite, and abnormal breathing. Treatment becomes difficult when infection involves muscle or internal organs. A red lesion alone does not establish a diagnosis, because injuries and other infections can produce similar signs. Diagnostic testing may be needed to determine the cause.

Observe new fish separately from the display aquarium for several weeks, checking appetite, breathing, and skin condition. The required quarantine period depends on the fish’s condition and the pathogens of concern; elapsed time alone does not establish freedom from disease. Avoid crowding, accumulated uneaten food, and handling injuries, and keep quarantine nets and containers separate from those used for the display aquarium.

Some Uronema ciliates can live outside a fish host, so leaving an aquarium without fish may not eliminate them. Freshwater dips and treatments acting on the body surface should not be assumed to clear infections that have entered internal tissues. Avoid trying medicated food, baths, or combinations of medications without an appropriate diagnosis, and consult a veterinarian experienced with fish when abnormalities appear.

Breeding

Reliable external characteristics for distinguishing males and females are not well documented. Do not determine sex solely from body size or color intensity; careful observation, including reproductive behavior, is needed.
An egg-laying species that forms pairs during reproduction. Its demersal eggs adhere to surfaces such as rocks rather than drifting in the water. After spawning, the male guards the eggs and fans them to maintain water movement around them.

Captive breeding and larval rearing have been reported for this species, but obtaining a spawn and raising the larvae are separate challenges. Providing live food small enough for newly hatched larvae is particularly important. Reported rearing methods use copepods initially, with rotifers and other foods introduced as the larvae develop.

Provide separate larval-rearing facilities and a dependable supply of suitable live food. Match food size and quantity, water quality, and water movement to the developmental stage, and keep records of progress. Successful breeding reports do not mean that young can easily be raised without intervention in an ordinary community aquarium.

Trivia and Fun Facts

A Black Bar Reflected in Two Names 「クロオビ」という和名は、体の後ろ寄りにある黒い帯をよく表しています。

The Japanese name “Kuroobi,” meaning “black belt,” aptly describes the dark band toward the rear of the body. The same feature is reflected in the species name: the Latin “retro” refers to the rear, while “fasciatus” means banded. The name therefore indicates both the marking and its position.

Look beyond the band to the pale area behind it and the blue around the eye to appreciate the finer details of its coloration. Its laterally compressed body is another distinctive feature: relatively deep when viewed from the side, but narrow when viewed head-on. A change in viewing angle reveals a different impression of both its colors and its shape.
A Specimen Story from the Siboga Expedition

Tracing the scientific name of the Black-bar Chromis leads back to the Siboga Expedition, which surveyed waters around Indonesia in 1899–1900. Zoologist Max Weber studied fishes collected during the expedition and described this species in 1913. Its type locality—the place where the specimen serving as the reference for its scientific name was collected—is Kur Island, Indonesia, at Siboga Station 250, at a depth of 27 m.

The collection of a specimen and its publication as a new species need not occur in the same year. Specimens are examined and compared with other species before a name is formally established. Even the name of a small aquarium fish preserves a history of field exploration and specimen-based research.
Relationships Reconsidered Through DNA

This species was long known as Chromis retrofasciata. Research, including comparisons of DNA sequences, showed that the traditional genus Chromis contained fishes that did not form a single natural evolutionary group. In the 2021 revision by Tang and colleagues, Pycnochromis was reinstated as a distinct genus, and this species was assigned to it.

The spelling Pycnochromis retrofasciata may still be encountered, but the currently accepted name is Pycnochromis retrofasciatus. Both the genus and the ending of the species name matter when comparing older field guides and trade names.

This fish has 12 dorsal-fin spines. Such physical features provide useful taxonomic clues, but spine counts alone do not determine evolutionary relationships. Studying both DNA and morphology reveals connections that appearance alone may obscure, including the close relationship between Pycnochromis and Dascyllus.
A Wide Ocean, but a Home Close to Coral

The Black-bar Chromis is widely distributed in the western Pacific, with records extending to a depth of 120 m. An individual fish’s daily life, however, is closely associated with fine-scale shelter such as branching coral. Individuals or small groups inhabit clear lagoons and seaward reefs, remaining close to densely branching coral. A broad geographic range does not mean that each fish routinely travels far from its shelter.

Understanding this lifestyle helps explain aquarium layout needs. Rather than providing only a large swimming area, include retreats that the fish can return to after feeding. Rockwork with accessible crevices also provides opportunities to observe it moving between shelter and open water.
Nutrients and Water Movement Linking Fish and Coral

Relationships between coral-dwelling damselfishes and their hosts are not necessarily one-sided arrangements in which only the fish benefits. Studies involving damselfishes other than the Black-bar Chromis suggest that nutrients released by fish can benefit corals and the photosynthetic algae living within their tissues. Research has also examined how fin movements improve water exchange between coral branches and help supply oxygen when it becomes depleted at night. The coral providing shelter can therefore benefit from the presence of its fish residents.

Experiments with particular coral–damselfish combinations have found that corals housed with fish were less affected by elevated temperatures than corals without fish. Fish-derived nutrients are one proposed explanation. These results do not mean that adding a Black-bar Chromis will prevent coral bleaching. Whether the same benefits occur with this species, or can be reproduced in a home aquarium, remains uncertain. Fish should not be relied upon to replace appropriate temperature and water-flow management.
Looking Beyond the Price Tag

Color and price naturally attract attention when choosing an aquarium fish, but its care since arrival at the retailer is also important. Observe whether it actively pursues food, whether red lesions are present, and whether other fish repeatedly harass it. Ask about the time since arrival, its progress, and the quarantine procedures used.

A “quarantined” label does not eliminate every possibility of disease. Treating the retailer’s care and your own isolation period as consecutive stages helps protect both the newcomer and the existing aquarium. Appetite and behavior deserve attention alongside appearance.
Seasonal Considerations for Transport in Japan

When purchasing by mail order, plan not only the shipping method but also a delivery date when the parcel can be received promptly. Heating and cooling requirements depend on the season, journey duration, and conditions along the route, so confirm arrangements with the retailer.

Heat packs used in winter require oxygen to generate heat. Packaging must therefore provide suitable access to air as well as insulation, while preventing excessive direct heating of the fish bag. Summer transport requires protection against both overheating and overcooling. Refrigerated or frozen food-delivery services operate at temperatures too low to substitute for suitable tropical marine fish transport. During extreme heat or cold, discuss rescheduling with the retailer rather than proceeding at the expense of the fish’s safety.

Conclusion

The Black-bar Chromis is a small marine fish distinguished by the contrast between its pale body, dark band, and white tail base. Blue accents around the eye and its habit of feeding near shelter add to its appeal, bringing subtle movement to an aquascape of rocks and corals.

Successful care begins with stable temperature and water quality, ample shelters, quarantine, and daily observation. When keeping several fish or planning a community aquarium, prioritize each individual’s access to food and retreats rather than group size or appearance alone. A settled environment allows both its distinctive coloration and its behavior around shelter to be appreciated.
