Thayeria

Thayeria is a genus of small South American freshwater characins known for its elegant, oblique swimming posture and the striking black lateral stripe that extends toward the caudal fin, giving well-known species such as Thayeria boehlkei their familiar “penguin tetra” or “hockey-stick tetra” appearance. As peaceful schooling fish, Thayeria displays its greatest charm when kept in groups, where the synchronized movement and angled body position create a graceful sense of motion in the aquarium. In captivity, Thayeria benefits from a stable tropical environment with clean water, open swimming space, subdued planting, and compatible tankmates, while breeding requires attention to egg-scattering behavior and the protection of eggs and fry from adult fish, making this genus both visually appealing and biologically interesting for aquarists who value natural behavior.
