Phycocharax rasbora

Phycocharax rasbora is a small and distinctive Brazilian characin known from the rio Braço Norte, a tributary of the rio Teles Pires in the Tapajós basin, where its compact body form and dark lateral marking give it an appearance reminiscent of unrelated Asian rasboras. As a rare monotypic species, Phycocharax rasbora is especially interesting from a taxonomic and biogeographic perspective, while males can show attractive reddish coloration that enhances its value among aquarists interested in unusual South American tetras. In captivity, Phycocharax rasbora should be maintained in a calm, stable aquarium with clean, soft to moderately soft water, subdued lighting, fine foods, and peaceful tankmates, allowing its delicate coloration, schooling behavior, and unique natural character to be appreciated without stress.
