Axelrodia riesei is a very small South American characin from Colombia, admired in the aquarium hobby as the ruby tetra for its rich red coloration, delicate body form, and refined beauty that becomes especially striking in a calm, well-maintained planted aquarium. Although modest in size, Axelrodia riesei has a strong ornamental presence when kept in groups, where its peaceful schooling behavior and jewel-like color create a soft but vivid accent among aquatic plants and subdued surroundings. In captivity, Axelrodia riesei should be maintained with gentle tankmates, stable warm water, fine foods suited to its small mouth, and an environment free from aggressive competition, allowing its natural color, confidence, and graceful movement to develop fully.
